THE PLACE OF MUSIC IN THE LIFE OF THE BELIEVER
Music; simply defined is organized sound and is an important tool that affects every facet of life because it has an enormous effect on the mind. It affects the emotions and therefore affects a person’s character. Messages passed through music have a more lasting effect than those written or spoken. It is used in medicine as a therapeutic tool because it heals the mind. Some of the effects of musical therapy are: it relieves pain, manages stress, expresses feelings, improves communication, promotes physical rehabilitation and overall wellness.
We see this in the Bible when Saul was being tormented by an evil spirit and David was brought to play and every time he played, the evil spirit left him alone.
Through the scriptures we realize that God places a great deal of importance on music. He created Lucifer with everything he needed to make quality music so that he could glorify Him. Permit me therefore to say that God created music for the sole purpose of worshipping Him but today music has been polluted because, the angel God put in charge of music now does everything in his power to frustrate God's plan.
He also specifically separated the Levites and Priests unto Himself to sing and make music for His praise and glory.
There is a spirit mind behind every music and song; they are either inspired by God or the devil (Lucifer), this why as Christians we should be careful what we listen to. The Bible says guard your heart with all diligence because out of it flows the issues of life (Prov. 4:23). The ear is one of the gates to the human mind. Whatever comes through the ear gate gradually grows and begins to bear either good or evil fruit.
Knowing that all music is inspired either by the devil or God, music therefore also serves as gate for God to come into our different areas of life, it can also serve as a gate for the devil to come through to afflict and oppress a person.
In the book of Eph. 5:18-19 and Col. 3:16 we are admonished and commanded to sing psalms, hymns, spiritual songs and to make melody in our hearts to the Lord. These we can see in these scriptures are ways through which we can be full of the Holy Spirit and the word of God.
Elisha in 2 Kings 3:15 asked for a minstrel (harpist) to come and play, and as he played,
the Holy Spirit inspired Elisha to speak.
Also in 2 Chronicles 20:21, King Jehoshaphat in the face of battle appointed people to sing and praise and God turned Judah against themselves.
Again 2 Chronicles 5:11-14, we see the Priests and Levites worship God with musical instruments in one accord. It was recorded that the glory of God filled the temple to extent that the priests could not perform their service; that is the pastors could not even preach or do any other thing. God completely took over the service. God indeed inhabits the praises of His people.
All through the Book of Psalms we are commanded and admonished to praise God with music and singing. God loves good music coming from a broken and a contrite heart.
In conclusion, music brings healing to our minds and most importantly music that glorifies God opens the door for Him to come in and when He comes in everything that that is contrary to His will must give way. So also music that does not glorify God gives the devil a foothold, and remember, we are warned to NOT give the devil a foothold in our lives. If you give him a foothold he will turn it to a stronghold.
Which kind of music are you listening to? What effect is it producing in your life? Is it giving room to God or the devil.....Selah! (pause and calmly think of that!)
